(8 Brass) (Level 3) How sweet the sound! If this earthy sax feature can't bring out the David Sanborn in your soloist, nothing will. Written in a slow rhythm and blues three (9/8) time, this chart falls into a groove that never stops growing. A strong supporting role, as played by the guitarist, helps bring this arrangement to an uplifting ending. No doubles.

(Level IV) This is an Aretha Franklin style, slow bluesy gospel tune in 3:4 time. It features the lead tenor saxophone, as it was first performed by Seamus Blake and the UNCG Jazz Ensemble. This features lots of plunger work by the brass. On the original recording, a Hammond B3 replaced the piano, which is an option, too. Gospel begins bare bones and boils to a rousing finish. It is an extremely satisfying piece to play. 8 Brass

(Level III) La Verne City Blues, by Brian Owen, is an excellent blues vehicle for younger band. Intended as a chart for Middle and Junior High School bands, it provides a chance to feature the soloists of the band. A great little march section leads into the solo section where your tenor 1, trumpet 1, and trombone 1 can be featured. A challenging but rewarding shout section follows the solos. Lots of opportunity to provide excitement throughout this chart! 8 Brass - Rhythm Section parts written out.

(Level III) Clever arranging and tasteful orchestration give this "ensemble feature" a fresh yet traditional look at swing. An introduction marked by interesting bass, trombone and brush work gives way to a light two beat presentation of the head before settling into a moderate tempo straight-ahead groove. The ensemble gets a chance to show its teeth as the piece half-times into a slow, hard bluesy feel and a brief stop time section en route to the original tempo and a great ending. Brief solos for soprano, bari and piano. Alto I-sop., Alto II, Ten. I & II-fl., Bari-fl./picc.   8 Brass
