(Level 4) RHYTHM! At least you'd better have to play this irreverent arrangement of the Richard Rodger's classic. No matter how many times you've heard it done, you've never heard it like this before. It's powerful, fast, humorous and contains a sax soli you simply won't believe. On NTSU's Lab 80. Solos for trombone, trumpet bass and drums. No sax doubles. 10 Brass

(8 Brass) (Level 4) All the elements of progressive mainstream jazz combine in this fiery composition honoring Mr. Leon Breeden and his many years of service to the jazz community. Wasting no time, this swinger goes immediately for the throat. An aggressive head gives way to wide open solo changes and a wild interchange between the wind and drums before pulling out all stops. Recorded on NTSU's Lab 88 and UNC's Alive VIII CD. No doubles.

Two Steps Forward - One Step Back - (Level IV) Nine Brass - This is a medium-up, high energy swing chart written for standard or 9-brass big band. Inspired by the writing of Bob Mintzer, Thad Jones, and Bob Brookmeyer, "Two Steps Forward (One Step Back)" features a McCoy Tyner-esque introduction leading into a hard-bop style melody. The piece features a trumpet or trombone solo, followed by either guitar or baritone saxophone, ending in an energetic shout section that is punctuated by drum solos and fills. This chart would be a great choice for a high-level high school or college jazz band looking for an energetic opener or closer to their set.

Spring is Here (9 Brass) (Level 4) This moody standard is re-cast as a trombone solo set in a swing 2 feel. It features a farily edgy reharmonization of the melody with an extended solo section for the trombone soloist. This chart would be a great way to introduce your audiences to a wonderful, albeit lesser-known standard. Alto Saxophone lead (no woodwind doubles).

The rhythmic interplay of vocal parts frames the melody with a nice, playful “groove” that’s fun to sing as well.

(Level IV) This is a chart for flashy
soloing.
It uses simple diatonic
chord changes (albeit in a number of keys), and it moves at a rapid pace
(MM=260).
Jazz or rock tones will
work equally well for the soloists. There are some double- and
triple stops and full chords, but they are all manageable, and all in whole
notes. Guitar 5 is largely a
rhythm part; all the voicings are written out.To allow for two soloists,
take the DS from bar 201 back to bar 75; the first and second parts swap roles,
and their parts are essentially duplicates for that stretch of the chart. The section at m210 is
call-and-response; if the players hear and feel the responses in a dotted
eighth note rhythm, it will become clear.
Timing is crucial.
