I've replaced the Russian text with fast-moving scat syllables. "Pastores a Belan" comes from Puerto Rico. It's another of the amazingly beautiful melodies inspired by the events at Bethlehem. "O du fruhliche" harks back to a more traditional choral style.

We Three Kings (8 Brass, 5 Saxes) - Commissioned by the Boulevard Big Band and the Dream Factory, Kansas City, for their 1991 Christmas CD, this arrangement takes the original traditional Christmas song and reharmonizes the entire tune, with an alternating signature of 4/4 and 3/4 for added interest. Features a substantial tenor sax solo, but rhythm section is also prominently featured throughout on a distinct early 60's Blue-Note feel.

View all charts by Dan Gailey 		O Come, O Come Emmanuel (8 Brass) (Level 4) A contemporary "concert piece" setting of the familiar Christmas carol intended to feature either wind synthesizer or soprano saxophone (written on Reed I). This piece also requires keyboard synthesizer. The piece opens with an ethereal statement of the hymn by wind synthesizer and keyboard. This statement leads into a "GRP"-style funk groove for the improvisation, which is followed by a fugue for the brass section and a majestic finale featuring the entire group. The symphonic nature of this arrangement requires a fairly mature ensemble comfortable in both jazz and classical idioms.
