(Level IV) So Many Stars This magical Sergio Mendes tune is for female vocalist and features lush
woodwind doubles and muted brass ensembles. Bass clarinet doubles the bass in a
unifying theme. The solo section can be played by piano or guitar but can also
work with trombone (as on the recording). A catchy soli with vocal doubling in
“Brazilian” scat syllables recalls the classic sounds of 1960’s bossa nova,
morphing into a screaming climax. The final 7/4 vamp features swirling fugal
figures with plenty of scatting room for the vocalist. Lead trumpet up to written
F and lead trombone up to C. Recorded by
the Jazz Knights, featuring vocalist SSG Alexis Cole, on Turning Points. 8 Brass

(Level IV) Slip
Slide A
modern piece with unexpected turns and a nod to the avant-garde. Horns are
layered over an opening 7/4 vamp, and tenor takes over the melody. The piece
morphs into a bright 4/4 to half-time swing for a tenor solo, a brooding
straight 8’s groove with muted brass and woodwind backgrounds for a guitar
solo, and an electrifying brass/reeds call-and-response. Peppered throughout
are a number of effects, among them, metric modulations, “car horn honking,”
and a Doppler effect. The piece closes with ominous power chords over an
infectious hip-hop groove. This rhythmically intricate and creative piece is on
par with the adventurous writing of the current New York City jazz scene and
adds up to an impressive showcase for the advanced band. Lead trumpet up to
written D and lead trombone up to D. Performed
by the Jazz Knights. 8 Brass

(Level IV) Secret Love This beloved standard has an infectious vamp with powerful
swinging figures that serve as a vehicle for the featured soprano sax melody. A
catchy solo sendoff leads to a soprano solo. Though not written, one option is
for the soloist to begin the solo by vamping over the first two bars of the chart
(Eb-B-E9) and cueing the solo section at 88 when ready. A
trumpet solo follows the soprano solo with swinging backgrounds. A Thad
Jones-influenced sax soli (with soprano lead) leads to a final, meaty ensemble
shout. Interludes in the
statements of the melody offer a fun ride for the band and keep the audience
engaged throughout. Lead trumpet up to written Db and lead trombone up to Bb. Recorded by the Jazz Knights on At First Light. 8 Brass

Red, White and Blues - This exciting patriotic medly opens with a lush, a cappella SATB arrangement of the Mariners' Hymn and finishes with a smoking swing version of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. The chart features a rousing baritone solo and a unison bop chorus ala Parker and Gillespie. Excellent for scat singing. A first-rate closer! SATB with rhythm.

(Level IV) Reverse Peephole, by Scott Arcangel. A curious, lyrical melody over a unique set of chord changes that flows naturally, but not predictably over a slow straight-eighth jazz feel. Flugelhorn, baritone saxophone & guitar share the melody as well as the solo space. Alto 1 doubles on flute. Lead trumpet up to high F. Recorded by the West Point Band’s Jazz Knights on the CD Commissions 2006. (8 Brass)

(Level III) The Star-Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key, arranged by Scott Arcangel. This charts sticks to the traditional melody and phrasing of the US National Anthem, with several meter changes that allow the phrases to breathe. Starting out as a traditional brass chorale with a slight reharmonization, the saxophones join in and alto 2 takes the lead on a gospel-tinged bridge. It closes out with a broad, full-ensemble finale that is sure to bring any audience to its feet. Very playable by jazz ensembles of any level, lead trumpet up to high C above staff. Written for and performed by the West Point Band’s Jazz Knights. (8 Brass)

(Level IV) The Stakeout, by Scott Arcangel. An aggressive and hardboppish up-tempo powerhouse, for the classic pairing of trumpet and tenor. Highlights include a clever intro, a “mooing” trombone interlude and an intense shout section which features the drummer soloing around powerful ensemble writing. A showcase for the ensemble as well as trumpet & tenor soloists, The Stakeout makes a great opener or closer. Lead trumpet up to high G. Recorded by the West Point Band’s Jazz Knights on the CD At First Light. (8 Brass)

(Level IV) The Dark Moon waxes and wanes very similarly to an actual lunar cycle, with cyclic figures washing in and out over melodic material throughout the piece. Extended solo space for soprano sax and guitar serves the composition as much as it features the soloists. Layers of simple melodic lines over modern harmony and sounds make this a piece and ensemble can enjoy. Woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet (alternate parts without double included). Recorded by the West Point Band's Jazz Knights on the CD Turning Points. 8 Brass

(Level V) Concert version of the famous Johnny Green standard in 3/4 time; up tempo. The reharmonization and use of thematic material is interesting; this carries you throughout the chart. Featured soloists are lead also sax and lead tenor sax. The chart has challenging brass writing in the trumpet section but very rewarding, worth the time you spend to rehearse the arrangement. Originally commissioned for the Riverside City College Jazz Festival in April 2010, the chart was featured by the U.S. Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors for their Fall 2011 Tour of the Northeastern U.S., Spring 2012 Tour of the Southwestern U.S., and also featured at the Midwest Band Directors International Clinic in Chicago, Dec. 2011. Optional Vibes part. 9 or 10 Brass
