(Level III) Bones At The Ready Composed for and premiered by the
2010 International Trombone Festival Jazz Choir, members ages 20 to 80. A Bb
swing blues, playable by as few as four performers or as a larger choir.
Everyone gets a piece of the melody at some point. Lead part rises only to Ab
above the staff. The provided drum set part is optional. Solo space is provided
for each chair; but the chart performs wonderfully even if no one solos, as the
stop-times and riffs make for excellent passages on their own. It can easily be
opened up for additional soloists, including non-trombone guests. Works as an
opener or closer. This composition is dedicated to my older
brother, José, who played trombone in high school and was a great example of
musical interest, passion, dedication, hard work, and enjoyment.

(Level IV) Christmas as a Child
As sung by Eclipse on “It’s Christmas Time”
A relaxed Christmas ballad featuring contemporary pop styling and backing parts that are sculpted to paint tonal images around the lead line.
The lead line can be performed by a soloist, multiple soloists trading verses, or a section of the choir. Originally intended to be accompanied with vocal percussion, but drum set or percussion would work great also along with bass guitar doubling or replacing the bass part. Would also work well without percussion at all.
(5-part male with opt. improvised Voc. Perc.)

(Level IV) Early One Spring by Joel Nagel is a multi-sectional piece that offers two distinct contrasting sections. The first section, a driving straight eighth feel, incorporates mixed meter and layers simple ostinato figures over one another creating a complex counterpoint. This section calls for an aggressive trombone soloist that leads the band into a frenzy half-way through the piece. The second section features an extended Alto Sax solo over simple yet lush harmonies. A soaring melody emerges from the end of the solo and builds to a resounding climax. Other written solos include Bass Clarinet (Bari Sax) and Bass. Recorded on Thinking Globally, Acting Locally (University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band One) 9 Brass

(Level 3) This is an a cappella arrangement of Ralph Towner's beautiful melody, previously performed by the Paul Winter Consort and by Oregon, with poetic lyrics by Gary Rosen. Feeling Good
(Words and Music by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse)
Straight ahead in 7/4! This is fun and different arrangement of a song from “The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd” by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. It starts cool in the unexpected meter and gradually heats up to a big finish. There is a great opportunity for tenor soloist in a vocalese-style middle section. Challenging but worth the effort. (Level IV) I Should Care, by Cahn, Stordahl & Weston, arranged by Scott Arcangel. This medium-swing arrangement of the classic standard draws stylistically from the writing of Michael Abene and Thad Jones. A through-composed melodic introduction takes its time arriving at the melody, which features the flugelhorn. Modal interludes are interspersed with the standard changes throughout the tune. Melody and solo space make this a great feature for flugelhorn. Choruses of ensemble writing make this a showpiece for the entire ensemble. (8 Brass)
