It moves through a variety of feels with ample solo space for tenor and rhythm section (Coltrane-influenced Latin/swing, bluesy ballad, 6/8 afro-cuban vamp). KEN SCHAPHORST is Associate Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Prior to 1991, Schaphorst lived in Boston where he led the 18-piece Ken Schaphorst Big Band, hailed by the Boston Phoenix as "the most interesting and contemporary large ensemble to come out of Boston in recent years." While in Boston Schaphorst also helped found the Jazz Composers Alliance, a non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of new music in the jazz idiom. Schaphorst studied at Swarthmore College, New England Conservatory and Boston University where he received the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in 1990. Awarded composition fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1988 and 1991, Meet the Composer Grants in 1987 and 1997 and a Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowship in 1997, Schaphorst's composing and arranging is featured on four recordings on Accurate Records, Making Lunch (1989), After Blue (1991), When the Moon Jumps (1994) and Over the Rainbow (1997). His most recent recording, Ken Schaphorst Big Band: Purple, was released on Naxos Jazz in January, 1999.
