Description About the Composer

Close Up Tight - Bill Chase - Level 5 (4 Brass) Trumpet Combo - (4 Trumpets, Guitar, Organ, Bass, and Drum Set)

The Chase family and Cha-Bil publishing are pleased to publish “Close Up Tight” from the Chase library on the anniversary of Bill’s 80th birthday. Special thanks to the UNC Jazz Press for taking on this project. This version of Close Up Tight is based on the live performances of the band in the 1974 timeframe and release of the Chase album, Pure Music.

Editor/Arranger Notes: This arrangement does not include the flugelhorn doubling beneath the lead starting at measures 28 and 133. The flugel “call and answer” line by Jay Sollenberger was added at the time of the recording and is not part of the original composition. We elected to provide the “live” arrangement without the doubling to be consistent with Bill’s 4 trumpets-guitar-bass-keyboard-drums 1974 band configuration. This arrangement is also different than the studio session from 1972, a “rockier” early version of Close Up Tight that featured Phil Porter (organ), Bill, Ted Piercefield (valve trombone), and Jerry Van Blair. While that version is similar in structure, there are notable differences in voicings especially with trumpet 2 and trumpet 3 and slight differences in Bill’s part as well. The original April 1973 copy work was done by copyist Ron Kolber of Chicago and served as the foundation for this version of the arrangement. The original Kolber copy of Close Up Tight has two versions of trumpet 3 arranged and voiced. The 1972 recording and 1974 album use different versions of trumpet 3 which also resulted in changes to the trumpet 2 voicing. Bill was constantly refining his arrangements; live concert recordings show how the charts evolved over time, including Close Up Tight. Early on, Bill used electronics as part of the intro before the chart begins using keyboard synthesizer effects and his trumpet with an echoplex, octave divider and ring modulator reminiscent of Don Ellis.

We hope the reader will enjoy performing this chart as well as the bits of trivia above.
