Description About the Composer

(Level IV) Death Scene - An original composition inspired by the wedding of Romeo and Juliet (part of the University of Northern Colorado's Romeo and Juliet Project). Romeo and Juliet: Death Scene - This piece captures the very tactile mood that the scene conjures–the delicateness and weight of these moments…feelings of emptiness, longing, and desperation. Underlying all are the ominous undertones of destiny, which are represented musically in two ways. First, through the use of recurring pedal points – the concert G that opens the piece and later the C pedal found behind our protagonist (the soprano saxophone) during the solo section. And second, through the composition’s primary theme which slowly morphs to become more dissonant, fully orchestrated, and rhythmically relentless. Above this framework, the work plays out like the scene itself. The saxophone soloist representing the thoughts and feelings of both characters, the introduction – the musical “color” of the church courtyard and tomb, while additional motives swell to reflect Romeo and Juliet’s feelings of despair and ultimately mark their deaths..
