A Friendly Exchange (Level IV) Scored for alto and
tenor saxophones, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums, “A Friendly
Exchange” draws from bebop and funk influences but with harmonic and formal
twists. The guitar is scored as a single-line instrument that should perform at
a volume equal to the role of a horn-player in the four voices that comprise
the presentation of the tune. Everyone may receive solo space at some point in
the chart.
The work was featured as
part of an exchange program between Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond,
VA) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Durban, South Africa) and was
performed by the VCU Africa Combo in March 2014 in Durban.
